My video short, Mechanical Bull (Video Sintesi) will be screened at the T-10 Video Festival in Oakland on Friday July 15th. The work was created scrambling frames of video in random and semi-random ways. Mechanical Bull investigates the use of time in video, especially in documentary web-based works.

About the T-10 Festival:
An hour of videos under 10 minutes long each night, followed by a 30 minute feature on a local, accomplished and often under-recognized video artist.

Video, once deemed the bastard sibling of film, with its low resolution, electronic flatness and proletarian personality, has become the ubiquitous face of media production and consumption. Film, once the primary media of cinema, has been supplanted. Still it refuses to yield, admitting that most productions involve no film. Coupled with the rapid growth of DSLR cameras that capture HD, is it still possible to define the difference now between “film” and “video”? How do works that exist outside of narrative conceit find an audience?

The personal and immediate nature of video recording works to the advantage of the amateur and the artist, subverting the commercial system of entertainment that insists we are consumers before we are citizens. Video now represents a collapsed media field that must combine the philosophical intent of cinema with the vernacular of YouTube, while supporting unexpected and unanticipated explorations of the moving image.

This year’s T-10 Video Festival reflects the broad field of video, including experimental documentary, narrative shorts, animations and expanded media works. This year’s entries showcase local, national and international works exploring themes as diverse as industrial food production, the collapse of the American housing market, to the existential musings of a house cat.

Hysteresis leads a meditative journey into unfamiliar alien territory. – Julie Potter, SF Examiner

Unfettered from the sense that there was something “to get,” the viewer’s mind was free to drift among associations, the dancers evoking now a flock of birds, now an ocean current, now a windstorm gathering force.
Bonner Odell, In Dance

San Francisco-based dance company DOUBLE VISION will present the east coast premiere of Hysteresis at the Merce Cunningham Studio in New York City on Friday, July 9 and Saturday, July 10, 2010. Under the direction of choreographer Pauline Jennings and composer Sean Clute, DOUBLE VISION has created un-conventional intermedia performances fusing dance, music and video that embody the changing landscape of contemporary culture. Free from traditional structures and narratives, Hysteresis evokes an abstract dreamscape rich in complex shapes, relationships and points of meditation. To deliver a rich, visceral experience, unique to each audience member, the work presents them with unknown customs, languages, and symbols through movement, sound and the implementation of hysteretic systems. Fleeting patterns dissolve into autonomous polyrhythms and intersecting lines as five dancers slip through light – leaping, twisting, striking, and resisting rest.

Hysteresis features choreography by Pauline Jennings, music by Sean Clute, lighting design by Ben Coolik, costuming by Andrea Campbell and performances by Blaine Bookey, Emily Gorman, Wendy Marinaccio, Jennifer Mellor and Cecelia Peterson.

Since its inception in 2003, the San Francisco-based company has distinguished itself both nationally and internationally. In 2008, DOUBLE VISION celebrated its fifth year by embarking upon an ambitious U.S. tour, the 4×60 Tour, a seventeen city tour that included San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Boulder, Columbus, Chicago and Brooklyn. Following the success of the 4×60 Tour, Clute and Jennings travelled to Europe where they were in residence at the Museumsquartier, January – February, 2009. During the residence, they performed and lectured at the University of Applied Arts (Vienna), the Museumsquartier Wien (Vienna), Pécsi Tudományegyetem Művészeti Kar (Péc), Institut Intermédií (Prague), and CST Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology + Tanz Akademie Zürich (Zurich). The performance, Six Donuts, at the Museumsquartier boasted five dance and audiovisual world premieres that were developed during the two-month residency.

DOUBLE VISION has presented work at venues including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, CounterPULSE and ODC Theater. The company has also lectured and led master classes at the University of California at Berkeley, University of New Mexico, Arizona State University, Mills College, University of Arizona, College of Santa Fe, and the University of Brighton (UK).

The development of Hysteresis was made possible through generous private donations, CounterPULSE’s fiscal sponsor program, The Garage’s RAW Program and grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Activities of the Merce Cunningham Studio are made possible by generous support from the Arnhold Foundation, the Dedalus Foundation, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and through public support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency

“…exhilarating, funny, challenging, complex, beautiful. Un-conventional and experimental, just the way modern dance should be.” – Yelp

“Unfettered from the sense that there was something “to get,” the viewer’s mind was free to drift among associations, the dancers evoking now a flock of birds, now an ocean current, now a windstorm gathering force.” – Bonner Odell, IN DANCE

DOUBLE VISION will present the world premiere of Hysteresis, an evening-length dance showcasing choreography by Pauline Jennings, sound and video by Sean Clute, lighting and set design by Ben Coolik and costume design by Andrea Campbell. Hysteresis features virtuosic and poly-rhythmic movement patterns, contrapuntal groupings and moments of live-triggered responses. Free from traditional structures and narratives, the dance evokes an abstract dreamscape rich in complex shapes, relationships and points of meditation for the audience.

Hysteresis was informed by a residency in Vienna, Austria, at the Museumsquartier. The work is a metaphor for the state of being alien or observing that which is alien to oneself. The audience is presented with unknown customs, languages, and symbols through abstraction of image and sound. As the observer experiences what is at first deemed noise, clear relationships and patterns begin to emerge and understanding can occur. Noise gives way to an idea and the idea leads to a certain comfort in this incessantly uncertain world.

Performances by Blaine Bookey, Emily Gorman, Wendy Marinaccio, Jennifer Mellor and Cecelia Peterson.

Hysteresis was made possible through generous private donations, CounterPULSE’s fiscal sponsor program, The Garage’s RAW Program and grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

DOUBLE VISION (www.double-vision.biz), creates contemporary performances for dance, music, video and interactive technology. At the heart of our work is a need to experiment and seek meaning in the ever-changing landscape of contemporary culture. The result is a body of work that is complex, humorous, quirky and continuously evolving. Led by Pauline Jennings and Sean Clute, DOUBLE VISION recently celebrated their first five years with two ambitious tours. First, the company produced a 5-week, 17-city tour of the United States and then participated in a 2-month residency at the Museums Quartier in Vienna, Austria with additional performances in Prague, Zurich and Pecs.

December 10, 2009 | L.A.C.E & DOUBLE VISION | Rowan Lofts, Los Angeles, CA

L.A.C.E. & DOUBLE VISION Present: Palimpsest

The Los Angeles Contemporary Ensemble (L.A.C.E) and San Francisco based intermedia group DOUBLE VISION will be performing Palimpsest at the Rowan Lofts in downtown Los Angeles. The work will include contemporary dance with movements based on forms of destruction in which materials are over-written. The work will include movement, video, sound and sculpture as well as audience interaction. Throughout the performance these elements create, destroy, and reconstruct top secret blueprints of theme parks in far off lands.

The L.A.C.E. Theater was founded in 2003 by the Los Angeles-based dancer/choreographer, Caitlyn Carradine, to be a “laboratory” to develop experimental ballet works, and to push the limits of contemporary dance
theater by having a place to work out new ideas, and test them in front of
small audiences.

DOUBLE VISION, led by Sean Clute and Pauline Jennings, is a group of dancers, musicians, video-artists, and performers. By experimenting with different methods of collaboration through the adaptation of social systems, transvergence of scientific models, and mapping of algorithmic structures, DOUBLE VISION unifies multifaceted art forms and ideas to cultivate innovative performances.

Dance and performance by Blaine Bookey, Caitlyn Carradine, Nicole Dionne, Pauline Jennings and Wendy Marinaccio, Jennifer Mellor; music and video by Sean Clute.

One hundred and sixty years ago gold seekers known as the forty-niners traveled to California by wagon, boat, and foot in the quest for riches. Miners turned millionaires donated their riches to little known performing art troupes in San Francisco. History repeats itself, or at least we are hoping, so spring your wealth at DOUBLE VISION’s annual fundraiser. We need some gold, or at least some buckets and a map, to support our artistic journeys and support upcoming innovate performance of high value.

The fundraiser will showcase performances by DOUBLE VISION dancers, old tune-y music by Sean Clute and live LoopyCam video performances by Tim Thompson. Our very own O-niners led by the unconquerable Nicole Zvarik, will entice you to join their gold-panning bootcamp, while the “Gold Rush Girls” video installation by Jessica Gomula will point the way toward bona-fide fortunes!

Funds for this event will be contributed toward DOUBLE VISION’s production of Hysteresis, a new dance performance that questions the relevance of virtuosity in contemporary performance. Phase 1 of the work will premiere in the Women on the Way Festival (January 2010) and Phase 2 of the work, which includes a team of five collaborators, will premiere April 9-11, 2010 at Dance Mission Theater in San Francisco.
